PROMPT Speech Therapy

What is PROMPT Therapy?

We understand that having a child facing speech challenges can be a daunting journey for any family. It's not just about the words they say, but the frustration, confusion, and sometimes even isolation that these difficulties can bring. We empathize deeply with the struggles you and your loved ones may be experiencing, and we want you to know that you're not alone on this path.

The main benefits of getting support for your child:

  • Clearer Speech

  • Improved Communication Skills

  • Most Importantly, Confidence!

That’s where PROMPT speech therapy can help!

Is PROMPT right for your child?

PROMPT is an acronym for Prompts for Restructuring Oral Muscular Phonetic Targets. The therapist uses touch and movement cues on the jaw, tongue, and lips to manually guide them through a targeted word, phrase or sentence.  PROMPT is like physical therapy for the mouth. It works because the child is actually able to feel the difference, making it easier for them to correct their movements.

PROMPT therapy is appropriate for a wide range of patients with speech sound disorders and those who need support learning how to produce sounds and words. We see issues like apraxia, autism, articulation problems most often in pre-verbal and non-speaking children.

PROMPT can benefit these diagnoses:

  • Childhood Apraxia of Speech/ Motor Planning Difficulties

  • Dysarthria/ Muscle Weakness

  • Speech Sound Disorders

  • Developmental Delays

  • Cleft Palate or Craniofacial Anomalies

  • Neurological Conditions

  • Autism

Schedule an evaluation with our PROMPT trained clinician who can help identify, develop, and improve verbal communication and articulation. We utilize various sensory-motor techniques to prepare your child's oral-facial musculature for the input. These techniques help your child's sensory system to readily accept the input and to process the motor speech movements more efficiently.

Dr. Jennifer Moore is the ONLY Certified PROMPT Instructor in NJ. She oversees all treatment plans. Our therapists work directly under her guidance.

A Holistic Approach

What sets us apart at PROMPT is our holistic approach to therapy. We systematically determine where motor breakdowns occur using our special assessment tools and something we call the Conceptual Framework, which helps us determine priorities in treatment.

Communication is an interaction between the Social-Emotional ability to connect with others, Cognitive-Linguistic understanding of language, and Physical-Sensory ability to produce certain words. If any of these areas are impacted, the client’s ability to communicate is impacted.

Motor and Muscle-Based Approach

PROMPT therapy targets meaningful words within functional language forms to improve motor speech control. PROMPT therapy does not use “drills” to teach motor plannings nor does the session require being seated at the table. Instead, we use what is interesting and motivating to the child while working wherever the child feels most content. This often includes games, toys, sensory activities, and movement-based activities on the floor, at a table, on a swing, or on a mat!

“My son has been in speech therapy for 8 years. We have gone through early intervention and speech therapy that was provided at the public school. When we started with Jen Moore and Jen Hartman at Brave Wings, the progress that was seen within the first few weeks was incredible. They are not only speech therapists to our family, they are a strong part of our support system on our journey. They always provide feedback and give us ways to implement the strategies they use in our daily routines. There is no question that Brave Wings is number 1 in their field.”
