PROMPT Speech Therapy

What is PROMPT Therapy?

Many toddlers, children and even pre-teens can have difficulties with speech clarity. PROMPT is a uniwue, research-based approach which focuses on underlying motor and muslce movements needed for clear speech not just sounds. PROMPT addresses the root of the cause of articulation breakdowns and uses touch and movement-based cues to help kids FEEL how to move their muscles. Traditional speech therapy tends to only a “look and listen” approach which can be challenging for most kids and may take them longer to learn correct speech production. PROMPT therapy and the underlying framework is research-based. Our owner, Dr. Jenn Moore EdD CCC-SLP, has been a PROMPT Certified Instructor since 2012. Families are extremely satisfied with our PROMPT program and have seen such amazing changes in their child’s speech.

Here’s how s PROMPT can benefit your child:

  • Clearer speech

  • Improved oral muscle strength and accuracy for speech

  • Improved speech motor planning and programming

  • Improved communication skills

  • Most importantly, confidence!

Is PROMPT right for your child?

PROMPT is an approach which requires additional post-graduate training. Our owner, Dr. Jenn Moore EdD CCC-SLP, a PROMPT Certified Instructor , oversees all PROMPT programming and treatment planning. This specialized approach uses touch and movement cues on the jaw, tongue, and lips to manually guide the child’s mouth through a targeted word, phrase or sentence.  PROMPT is like physical therapy for the mouth. Kids can learn speech faster because they actually able to feel the movements, making it easier for them to make corrections and for their sensorimotor system to receive the input!

What if my child is tactile defensive?

Tactile defensive is when someone is sensitive to touch. Many kids can only tolerate small amounts or do not accept it at all. At Brave Wings Therapy, we reframe tactile defensiveness to think more about the WHY- what can be going on in the child’s system that can be causing this response? We are huge advocates for respecting a child’s bodily autonomy and sensory preferences. We spend a lot of time establishing trust to build up to core speech intervention. We also often work with children in the sensory gym to get their systems regulated so they can better receive therapeutic input. This is crucial for any form of therapy; not just PROMPT. Parents often come to our practice because their child was shutting down in therapy or was not making gains and we love seeing their child blossom with our approach. We want your child to see that therapy can be FUN and EMPOWERING!

PROMPT can benefit these diagnoses:

Brave Wings?

A Holistic Approach

At Brave Wings Therapy, we take a “whole child” approach to speech production. We look at all the areas which can impact communication such as body posture, oral structure, sensory processing/ regulation, language, and social interaction. Our sessions may look different because we adjust to the child’s needs. This often includes games, toys, sensory activities, and movement-based activities on the floor, at a table, on a swing, or on a mat! We set each child up for success by modifying the environment and therapy to meet them where they are.

Motor and Muscle-Based Approach

Speech involves our muscles and our motor system. Our brain tells our muscles how and when to move. Many breakdowns in speech production are due to a breakdown in the motor system (I know what I want to say but not sure how) or a breakdown in the muscle system (I know what I want to say, told my muscle what to do, but then they couldn’t do it). By directly addressing the muscle and motor system, we are able to build the strength, coordination, and motor planning needed for speech production and clarity!

Parent Love for Brave Wings Therapy

“My son has been in speech therapy for 8 years. We have gone through early intervention and speech therapy that was provided at the public school. When we started with Jen Moore and Jen Hartman at Brave Wings, the progress that was seen within the first few weeks was incredible. They are not only speech therapists to our family, they are a strong part of our support system on our journey. They always provide feedback and give us ways to implement the strategies they use in our daily routines. There is no question that Brave Wings is number 1 in their field.”
